| Clean water program in Dong Tam Village |
|
Poor water quality continues to pose a major threat to human health. Diarrhea alone amounts to an estimated 4.1 % of the total global burden of disease and is responsible for the deaths of 1.8 million people every year (WHO, 2004). It was estimated that 88% of that burden is attributable to unsafe water supply, poor sanitation and hygiene and is mostly concentrated on children in developing countries. A significant amount of disease could be prevented especially in developing countries through better access to safe water supply, adequate sanitation facilities and better hygiene practices.
In Vietnam, inadequate sanitation facilities, poor hygiene practices, and the ingestion of contaminated drinking water are the cause of almost half of the deaths and disease among the country’s youngest children, including high rates of malnutrition.
Only one third of the rural population can boast adequate sanitation facilities and in poorer, Ethnic Minority areas, this number is even lower. Of those who have access to sanitation only 17 per cent know how to use their facilities hygienically, increasing children’s risk of contracting water-borne diseases.
COCOA has had a program to drill bores and provide clean water to Minority Villagers in Binh Phuoc Province for 4 years. An Phu Village in Binh Long District was provided with 15 bores and tanks which can provide water for the 105 families that were relocated there. Tan Xuan Village in Outer Dong Xoai Township has had a 1 Km pipeline installed to bring water from Dong Xoai to the Village. Dong Tien Village and Dong Tam Village each received 6 bores and tanks. The Clean Water Program is ongoing, with plans now to provide more bores and tanks as funds become available. Cement tanks are now constructed at all new well sites, as these are cheaper to construct and easier for someone to get into periodically for cleaning the insides.
Drilling for water in Binh Phuoc is a laborious program, as the Province is located on top of a granite mantle that continues to a depth of 40 m or more. Drilling can take up to 10-14 days x 24 hours a day to complete each bore.
Please support this program with a donation for one bore
The cost of each bore plus tank is around $2,200
